Why hasn't Renewable Energy Taken Off Yet?

First Class Meeting

For the first class on Thursday, August 23 2007, 6-8:40 pm, please read the Introduction of the book assigned as textbook, namely Hermann Scheer, Energy Autonomy: The Economic, Social and Technological Case for Renewable Energy Earthscan Publications Ltd. (February 2007) Amazon.

Hans will give a presentation based on this Introduction, which gives an overview of the status of the global movement for renewable energy, and the obstacles it faces. Hans made a detailed paragraph-by-paragraph summary of this Introduction at http://gaia.econ.utah.edu/planning/seminar/literature/scheer2007/introduction/.

Another relevant article is chapter 5 in Joseph Romm's Hell and High Water, Harper Collins 2007 Amazon.

After this, Ivan Weber will talk about the history and status of the environmental movement in Utah. Ivan used to be the Sierra Club's Energy Chair (ended several years ago) and Kennecott's renewable energy enthusiast, and now is one of the crusaders for renewable energy integration into the built environment (buildings, cities, farms, industry, transportation, and all the rest of what we plan, design and construct). Ivan's reading list about Carbon Footprint and Climate Change is downloadable here as a MS Word file

If there is more time after this, we will begin discussing Feed-In Tariffs.
