One Million Trees for One Million People

Tree planing initiative in SL County

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon in partnership with mayors of
cities throughout the County is announcing *One Million Trees for One
Million People*, a ten-year tree planting initiative.  Planting one
million trees will create a community forest that will become a living
green infrastructure that supports a high quality of life for all
residents. The County is asking residents and businesses to plant trees
to improve air and water quality, reduce energy use, decrease carbon
emissions, and offset the effects of climate change and rapid urban growth.

The goal of One Million Trees is to plant the right tree in the right
place so that we realize the full benefits of the trees but also ensure
the trees are planted and cared for correctly for their lifetimes. Salt
Lake County has worked with urban foresters, nursery owners, and water
conservation specialists to develop a list of trees that will grow well
in the County, fit into a desert climate, and lead to a diverse
community forest. The County is developing tree stewardship guidelines
to help residents select, plant, and care for their new trees. All of
these materials will be available on a new County website in September.

One Million Trees is in its 'seedling' stage right now. As it grows, the
County will offer more resources including a new county-wide urban
forestry program that will create an inventory of trees; develop
sophisticated mapping tools to measure the impact of trees on climate,
land cover, and heat islands; and work closely with residents to care
for their trees.

During the startup phase, Salt Lake County has pledged to plant 10,000
trees during the months of September through December 2007. To meet this
goal, the Mayor is asking community groups, cities, schools, and
residents to plan a tree planting project. The projects can include any
number of trees on public or private property. We would like to list the
projects on the new website so that residents can get involved in their
neighborhoods. The website will also allow residents to report their
tree planting, sign up for One Million Tree updates, download tree care
resources, and learn more about urban forestry.

Mayor Corroon invites you to participate at any level and in every way.
