Welcome to the Utah Sustainability Portal
Communication and cooperation around environmental issues in Utah.
This interactive web site is administered, as a community service, by Hans G. Ehrbar at the Economics Department, University of Utah. It uses the versatile Open Source Content Management System Plone, which is a tool for co-operation over the internet. Good instructions for Plone users can be found at http://learnplone.org/documentation/tutorial/quick-start, and the Definite Guide is here.
This site is work in process. At the beginning, while Hans is learning the ropes as a Plone administrator, its main usefulness will probably be the calendar of events. Hans will keep it udated with environmental events in Utah. If you know of an event which should be on this site but isn't, please email Hans at ehrbar@lists.econ.utah.edu. Hans is also willing to add important non-environmental events. Besides, Hans is composing a page with links to local environmental groups, and certain environmental organizations have their homes on this server. It is hoped that over time this portal will not only a calendar of future events, but videos and discussion of past events. It is a place for News, Blogs, joint action and organizing.
If we want to prevent climate catastrophe, we have to make changes to the structure of our social relations very quickly. In the last few months, many new organizations have sprung into existence, because of the urgency of the situation. Interactive web sites are a good tool for organizing: they make it possible to network and co-operate. Hans is building this web site in the hope it will become a hub for information and co-operation. The software is very powerful; any functionality which you can think of can probably be implemented.
Why should you subscribe? As a subscriber, all the new items since your last login will be presented to you when you log in. Subscribers can add events to their home page and submit them for inclusion in the calendar. Subscribers can add comments to almost every page on this site. Hans is planning to make a blogging facility available, and the possibility to send instant messages to other. Subscribers can share the content on their home pages with other subscribers. If you forget your password, it can be emailed to you.
Thank you to Kinde Nebeker for the Utah Sustainability logo! Aesthetics are very important, and Hans would be more than happy to co-operate with any graphical artist to develop a distinctive look and feel for the site.
